Reinstall hopefully won't be needed, as I think I finally got it whipped. So nice to not have the status bar turned off after each new page. Geeze.
On Alexa, they are taking a bit more than I thought, certainly too much. But, perhaps this means there is ample room for improvement upon their system with alterior motives (spying for Amazon).
Since you've got a low threshold for this kind of thing would you feel any better, or more specifically would you use a system (assuming you cared anything about the rankings) that captured only the domain names of the pages you browsed (for the purpose of ranking them)?
I would feel better about it.

Wow and there it is. Way to turn a threat into opportunity. That's why I like you. You've got a good way of seeing.
So there's your niche. The non-malware Alexa.
What sort of data mining can be accomplished in a respectful, above-board manner (ie - without spying)?
Here are three sources of traffic data: the servers, the clients, and DNS (including other net tools).
Oop! Gotta run... back later - this is fun. Talk soon...

Hey, I like it! (And thanks.)
I suppose that Netcraft does all it's mining via the servers and DNS? How do they tell the OS of the host? I'm sure it must be something simple...
Getting data from the client would require a toolbar, I think? But the toolbar would only need to report back the domain name, the full path wouldn't even be required for extra privacy. Although, seems that there would need to be some kind of identifier also sent back so that attempts to manipulate the system from a single toolbar user could be ignored.

It's an interesting idea for a project, might have to sit on the backburner for a little bit. Gotta get your plan together if you are going to try to go against the tide and up against the amalexa monster.
