What's the difference between Dedicated & Co-location  Reply with quote

Dedicated hosting is when a website has a complete computer dedicated to serving requests for that website. Dedicated hosting is utilized for very high traffic websites, in constract to the much more common type of hosting known as virtual hosting, where hundreds of websites may be hosted all by the same computer.

Co-location is when you provide the machine to be used for hosting, and contract with a secure facility which provides redundant connectivity, conditioned power as well as security for your host machines. This allows for a more secure environment than keeping the host in your bedroom, for example, where it is at more risk for power outages, fire, theft or curious children.

Many startup hosts prefer going colo straight away - and in most cases, this is not a good idea.

Getting a dedicated server at the start allows you to make payments over several months for the server, meaning you don't have to fork out several thousand pounds/dollars for a server, and then selling it if the business doesn't work out.
