Colocation Basics  Reply with quote

Colocation services are for hosting companies, resellers or the advanced webmaster with the need for complete control of system hardware and software configuration.

With colocation, you provide the server hardware (some companies may also offer packages to build and sell you a customer server). The colocation service should provide a secure location with restricted access, technical support personel, redundant internet connectivity and conditioned backup power in the case of spikes, brownouts or general outages. Co-location is very similar to dedicated hosting services except the colocated server is owned by you instead of being leased.

The two primary expensives with colocated servers are renting space in the hosting facility and connection fees. Rackmounted server machines can take as little as one rack space, up to four or more, depending upon the configuration and number of hard drives. Of course, connection fees are charged depending upon how many megabytes of bandwidth the server is utilizing. Various schemes exist for measuring bandwidth charges, including actual metered utilization to average bandwidth utilization.
