| What is a Registrar? |

A registrar is an entity that is accredited and authorized by ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) to register domain names on behalf of individuals, cooperatives and companies.
Go Daddy, Network Solutions, Register.com and Tucows are examples of some of the more popular registrars.
ICANN works with registrars to ensure that the Domain Name System (DNS) works correctly to allow the translation of names like "cnn.com" or "host4um.com" to the appropriate underlying IP address of any given registered domain name. If the DNS system failed to work, you wouldn't be able to get to your favorite websites unless you happened to know the actual IP address of that site.
