On More request for Help::machine.config File  Reply with quote

Hi all,

Can anyone help me in resolving my following problem?

Problem Statement:

My site went down immediately on installation of vpmodule.msi security patch from Microsoft. It was suggested by Microsoft themselves.

Description:

While investigation I had removed
<location impersonate = "false"> tag from machine.config file and to my surprise my site was up. But I am sure this is not the solution but a mere turnaround. It poses many security issues.

Request:

Can anyone provide me suggestion so as to install the patch and have my site working without removing <location impersonate = "false"> tag?

I had Microsoft kill my home computer with some updates too, so I know the feeling. They just don't have their act together as far as I'm concerned.

I'm more familiar with UNIX hosting, so I'm not sure of the ramifications of this setting. It would seem that setting an impersonation flag to false would be a safe bet, as impersonation generally equates with spoofing which isn't usually a good thing with respect to security.

Sorry that's not much help...

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately it will not serve my purpose to retain the tag along with installing the patch.

In case you come across any solution I would welcome it.

Solution:

Drop MS for internet services as fast as possible. It's obfuscated to hide it's systemic flaws. It survives because it's propped up by an excellent marketing campaign. Want proof? Last week's MS search engine launch.

Temporary Workaround:

There is no "location impersonate" tag in ASPX. There is a location block and there is an identity tag. You entire question is mangled. Re-ask, post your version info and the block of config you are having probs with. I will attempt to help.

Please remember to obscure the sensitive details.
