Formed in late 1998 to assume the responsibilities of IANA and other groups, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, known more commonly as ICANN, is an international non-profit private-sector corporation that is responsible for assigning Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and Top-Level Domain (TLD) names, and other important functions including the Domain Name System (DNS), accrediting and working with domain name registrars, and the maintenance of the Internet's root server system all of which help keep the Internet running smoothly.
