| How NOT to promote your hosting business |

The other day I got contacted about doing a business exchange: the company in question said they have some sites that their clients would like built, and they would like to hand over the job to our company in exchange for our use of their hosting service.
"Sure" I said. Send us some work, and we'll make sure we give you guys business back. All I asked was that I get some free access for a couple of weeks so I can make sure that php and mysql is up to date in order to handle the software we often use.
The company rep was happy to hear my reply. It turns out that few people have responded to his proposition, and he's sent quite a few.
Couple of days later, I was talking to him on the phone, and was asking some standard questions about the hosting packages... trying to think of whom might be a best fit for these guys hosting. The fellow answered all the questions wrong. First, he kept underlining that "yes, we are expensive when it comes to HD space, but bandwidth is cheap (how cheap? 3 cents per meg! WoW! that is EXPENSIVE. He agreed after I calcualted the per GB price ($30.00 where many companies will offer the same for $15 or so). HD space you ask? 150MB for 180 per year. "yes, we're expensive" he went on to repeat "but on top of that we offer 10 email accounts with 10mb each that does not get taken from the 150MB space for the website". Swell. Okay. Their packaging sucks, but their deal isn't that bad. They REALLY need to work on the packaging.
While on the phone asking these questions, I am told that "we haven't forgotten about the access to the server, but we're having some issues. Everything works except logins. "Once that is straightened out, we will get you a login" I was assured.
Two days later and Email:
"we can't give you access to the hosting. if you need what software we are running, just ask, and I'll find out".
Than on the phone:
'but I need to install a few things, get a feel for everything. the last thing I want to do is tell a client the site will be online in two weeks, and than have login problems 14 days into the project. I NEED to try your system first"
"oh, well just tell us who you are hosting with and I will comapre what they have and what we offer and let you know about any potential conflicts or shortcomings"
"come again? actually, never mind."
wut a waste!
