Where do you go to buy your domain(s)?  Reply with quote

Just curious to those of you who design and make a lot of web sites.

Which registar do you use or company?

Is it because they are cheap?

Good Support maybe?

Or Perhaps you like the look of their web site!

May be cliche', but I use GoDaddy.com, simply 'cause it was recommended to me when I needed my first domain, and I've kept using them because their service is a good one.

I use Dotster.

I need a registrar to:

maintain multiple domains in my acct

    accept CC payments

Let me edit my DNS records at whim

Activate my DNS changes in a timely fashion (like, immediately)

email me reminders for expirations and other such stuff

    respect my privacy

Dotster does all of that except they charge $10 per year per domain to give me access to edit my DNS records. I don't know what happens to my custom settings if I let the $10 per year addon lapse.

I'd like a reliable, trustworthy registrar that bundles the DNS editing in with the main registration fee so I don't have to worry about it.

Anybody?

E, not sure if I'm comprehending exactly what you are tweaking there.

With GD, I can change my nameservers, lock/unlock my domains, and I can indicate that a domain is a nameserver. What other kinds of things does one edit?

a registrar worth a spit is going to offer all that

(maintain multiple domains in my acct
accept CC payments
Let me edit my DNS records at whim
Activate my DNS changes in a timely fashion (like, immediately)
email me reminders for expirations and other such stuff
respect my privacy)

ergo, domain registration is going the way of everything else on the 'net: commoditization.

1and1.com is cheaper than GoDaddy (which is cheaper than Dotster, which is less than Register.com (the WORST domain registrar on the planet) and Netsol.

1and1.com has tons of tools, most I don't use, but they're there.

the Genie is out of the bottle...

You're right about that. I haven't shopped around since last century.

Thermit, I require access to my A recs and my CNAMEs and MX recs.

I used to use DynDNS when they were free and I continued with them when they started requiring donations. In return they promised to serve my configs forever. This has worked out well for me for nigh on six years. Best $30 I ever spent.

DynDNS pointed me to Dotster years ago and I obeyed. I'm happy with Dotster, but it's an ignorant kind of happy. I'm ignorant of the alterernatives.

Now I have somewhere between 15- 20 domains and I'd really like them all to live at the same place. I don't care about price, I want reliability and the ability to get into my DNS records. Easy to please.

I'm going to check out 1and1.com now, thanks for the tip.

Ah.

I did some research and GD has that. They call it Total DNS Control, and allows you to edit the records that you mentioned.

I used hostway back in the 90's. I was satisfied with them, but knew I could do better running my own servers.

They were $16 per month. At the time that was cheap.

The hosting was pretty solid, I'll give them that.

The support was somewhat lackluster, not sure if they were idiots or they thought all customers were idoits or both... Confused Confused

But the prices! It was fine for a starter account, but my first site grew to be fairly large on the diskspace usage and it was going to start costing mega bucks, which forced me out...

I use GD for my registrations but i kind of object to the large number of other services they try and force on you. If you ask me it is crap but i still use them to register domains names there. Maybe when it comes time to start renewing domains i will make a move away but for the time being i will just be staying put i reacon.

If you happen to have a reseller Account that has Web Hosting Manager you can actually control your own DNS through the WHM control Panel.
