I used to use ICQ, but now MS's. It's annoying to me because I use it for work mainly, and it will appear like I am online, when I appear offline to everyone else, so I have to jiggle the status everyonce in a while to make sure that I am really logged in, that makes it a piece of junk in my opinion.

I used to use instant messaging. I used ICQ, way back in the pre-AOL days, I had a very low id number. :)

Then I ran a Jabber server for a long time where just a few friends would connect.

Then I sorta stopped using any sort of IM shortly after starting my company. It became important for me to focus on client response time. While it seems like IM would help, it really became distracting.

When end users can't tell the difference between trivial and important issues, and when they can see you online, they are much more demanding. Something about the composition of an email slows them down and forces them to think for themselves.

Maybe it's the act of collecting all the details in one place before hitting 'send', I don't know.

Not that I mind being messaged. Not at all. I love my clients and would happily spend all day chatting with them and helping in every way. But in the end, that's not the best expense of my time. Unlike posting on this fine forum. Heheh. :)

Point is: IM among newbies is at times like a combination of the worst drawbacks of telephone, pager and email communications.
