| Absolute best way to design navigation. |
|
|
I've built sites that have the navigation at the top, and I've built them with the navigation on the left-hand side.
I've seen sites with navigation links on both sides, and then of course those interesting javascript menu systems.
From a usability / search engine friendliness point of view, what is the best way to design a site's navigation? _________________ ---

I avoid fancy navigation systems and try to keep things really simple for me, my users and the bots. Just straight HTML links.
They say to get your content as high as possible in the page, although I'm not sure if that matters a lot. You can always arrange your nav vs. content on the screen how you want regardless of the order in the HTML using table tricks, or style-sheet positioning.

Sitemaps are recommended as well, and useful for readers human and otherwise.

Most of my sites aren't really large enough for sitemaps (IMO), though I usually create them for search engine purposes. _________________ ---
