Googlebot Signature Experiment  Reply with quote

Not too surprising, interesting presentation...

Googlebot Signature Experiment

Leeds1 and Zeno on www.seo-guy.com forum claimed that google bot doesn't crawl forum signature links unless exact same link has been in text of message.

The more they hafta tweak out google to keep it fair, the more energy is wasted and the more useless google becomes. I don't wanna stop the world or anything.

Wonder what lies beyond search engines.

Good question, but SEs will be with us for a while, and there's nothing wrong with doing basic seo. These things actually help Google and such become better, because it can understand pages better, which helps readers find what they need.

Now the spammers that clog up the engines with autogenerated screen-scraper keyword directories and use tricky cloaking are the other side, like the Dark Side of the Force. They do harm the SE algy 'cause it results in unnatural filtering countermeasures and such, but we don't study black hat SEO here.

Related to what's after search, saw this snippet at webmasterworld, would post a link but it's in the private forum...

quote:

Are search engines the TV Networks of the Web and in this thing for the long haul of a few decades? Or are they transitory web phenoms that will fade like mood rings and pet rocks? "At the emerging technologies conference at M.I.T., a senior Microsoft researcher upset fellow speakers and the crowd by saying that search is soon to go downhill so you better grab the money while it's there."

After some bad experience i believe it may happen.

Google is getting bad to worst.

Rolling Eyes

Soon they will be useless.

I agree with UnXpected.

As good as Google has been, the search problem was never fully solved by Google. Add to that the fact that most of Google's core users (SEO'ers) have lax standards of public information ethics that tend to adversely affect Google's functionality. Add to that the bubbly nature of Google's IPO. It all spells correction.

Google, the company, will certainly survive and the tool will continue. But there IS a hype bubble, Google's value IS eroding and better solutions will come.

Don't forget a lot of forums turn off the signatures from being displayed to search engines.

You can check this by finding a posting and viewing the Google Cache

Doesn't seem like much point in doing that to me. It's not like they are leaking PR from forum pages...

I see.

There are a lot of spammers that use automated programs to register at PHPBB boards. They set a website in the profile and try to pick up PR from the memberlist page. There usually is no posting, just lots of registrations. But I fixed this by hiding the homepage link of members that have never posted. Ha!

Unfortunately it can be a battle.

True of the internet (or any complex human system, really):

The internet is the culmination of millions of value decisions over time - each of these decisions represents either destruction of OR contribution to the value of the internet.

The individual is capable of destroying more than the individual can contribute.

The golden rule is the only thing standing between us and a world of crap.

Sounds vaguely like the prisoners dilemma. Do you selfishly grab yours or work together for the common goal and greatest good?

There was a iconic UK TV series called the Prisoner.

His moto was, I am free man, not a number!

Close, number six. :)

It's a very interesting point.

Yet another 1960's-era context through which to view this situation is called the Tragedy of the Commons.
