I heard that the percentage of visitors that actually complete a transaction is very low: only 1 to 2%
For every 100 visitors, you have 1, maybe 2 purchases.
When I meet with my clients, I make certain they understand this ratio. If they have 300 units to move, I ask them how quickly they can generate 30,000 unique visitors.

I think that it depends on the market, the item, and how pre-qualified the buyer is. With PPC ads, I think many would go broke if it was only 1%, but then PPC pre-qualifies the buyer to some degree: they are searching for a product with buying on their mind. But, yeah, overall, the ratio is pretty low.

Actually, I used to buy plants from the bulk and sell them off in the forums. Bought like 500 plants and sold 10 bucks each. 50 plants per variety. I was very careful and hung around the forums to hear what the hobbyist wanted. Many of them wanted the varieties plants they couldn't get in the States. Strict Phytosanitary certificates, CITES, and customs kept them from importing small quantities. Other plant retailers took no notion to listen to the market and never imported the wanted plants. What made me successful was that I was a pioneer in the business. I kept close to the forums and made many contacts. After the whosale purchase, I practically had my whole stock spoken for in 2 days time. So there is a clear exception there. Thermit is correct when he said it depends on the market and items.
