| How do I change .php extensions to .html with phpbb |

I have been having trouble figuring out how to change extensions for forum links to .html. I understand that mod_rewrite is how to accomplish this, but there are so many variations that I am just having a hard time sorting through it. I am running on apache, and modrewrite is on. Does anyone know of a straigt forward way to implement mod_rewrite to change my phpbb topics to end in html 
Any help is appreciated.
