Starting Website-Some questions  Reply with quote

Hey guys, I am thinking of starting my own website, which will deal with local sports, providing scores of regional sports, high school rivalries, and local college athletic events. I believe my main source of income will come from from advertising, for local sport stores, maybe advertising local events/concerts/ etc.

Anyway here are some questions I have, appreciate any help answering them.

1- Any recommendations for pruchasing a domain name? I hear GoDaddy is good, but I dont really now anything? Same question for hosting? I need to find a quality, cheap hosting service.

2-Any idea on how to gauge how much badnwith and disk space i will need?

3. I am basically clueless when it comes to what type of scripting/programming i will need, so is there anything I should keep in mind? Try and find hosing that provides scripting/database support without any extra costs? Or are those not worth the price?

4.I am also thinking about having a forum on my site for discussion of local events etc..I am also thinking of perhaps a classified section where people can sell athletic gear, but this will just be a secondary option, unless I start making millions:) Will these require addiitonal scripting that will end up costing me, or will these come with the hosting package?

5. Am I missing anything?

Thanks in advance guys, appreciate the help.(Also posted in MoneyTalk Forums)

GoDaddy is great.

Early on websites need very very little space and bandwidth, as long as you can upgrade your hosting package you can start slow and just get a cheaper package.

I like Linux hosting because it's the best hands down. The Apache web-server rocks. The scripts that you can run will depend on your hosting OS and database support. MySQL is standard with Linux. You would probably want FTP access.

If you'd rather not fool with installing forum software consider a free hosted forum service like ForumWise. But if you are already paying for the hosting and comfortable with technical stuff you can install your own forum for free.

Hi!
answer to question:

1- Before buying a domain name you might want to check with a hosting service which most of the time will register your domain name for you at a nice price. www.startlogic.com is one that gives you all you need at a decent price.

2- All the basic packages of most, if not all, hosting services will give you more disk space and bandwidth that you will ever need for at least the first year of your Web site.

3- There is that site www.w3schools.com which in my case helped me a lot in the past which will teach you HTML, PHP, ASP and more.

4- A lot of hosting services provide forum setup in their package, like StartLogic. Forum's interface is pretty much simple, you should be good in about a few hours of cruising around in the interface.

5- Since you mention making millions and also for the above, you might want to take a look at http://www.moneyxtreme.com.

hope this helps
